MEET THE CHILDREN'S AUTHORS & ILLUSTRATORS

Kent-based writer/producer Robert Cox, and Mark Jenner of Endorfin TV, have worked together for many years making films and commercials. Robert is a published children’s author and has written and produced films for radio and TV both in the U.K. and Australia, whilst Mark and his production team are responsible for some of the well-known commercials on UK television, plus numerous corporate and promotional films. During sixteen years living in Queensland, Robert and his wife also ran a state-wide educational bookselling business where the names of leading children’s authors and illustrators first became familiar. It was during this time, whilst also running workshops in Brisbane’s primary schools, that it occurred to him how useful and inspiring a short film about a children’s author would be; an opportunity for the huge majority of schoolchildren (and teachers) around the world - never likely to be able to meet the name on the book cover in person - to enjoy the next best thing. It was an idea that wouldn’t go away, so Robert and Mark decided to go ahead and turn the vision into reality. A renewed acquaintance with prize-winning author/illustrator Anthony Browne and a chance introduction to BAFTA-award winning author/illustrator Nicholas Allan - both of them very positive about the idea - saw filming commence in July. An early decision was made to keep the films adult-free zones (apart from the author) with two young presenters asking the questions. The main criteria for their selection was that they were genuine bookworms prepared to ‘consume’ every word and picture of their subjects before meeting them. Mark’s 7-year old daughter April came ready-made, and Raurie Kelsey had previously acted in a Jenner/Cox TV commercial, quickly impressing with his enthusiasm and wide knowledge of books and authors. Word soon got round and soon other authors were agreeing to be filmed, resulting in four new films featuring Jacqueline Wilson, Anne Fine, Jane Ray and Catherine & Laurence Anholt. |
